Praça do Comércio or known in English as commerce square is based in the heart of Lisbon next to the river Tejo, was where the royal palace – Terreiro do Paço- stood for over two centuries until the great earthquake of 1755 reduced it to rubble. Out of the ruins came the resemblance of the square that we see today. After the resurection the square was the centre of many historial events such as the assassination of King Carlos and his son Luis Filip and in 1974 thousands of people gathered on the square to overthrew the dictatorial regime during the revolution.
Statue of King José I
Statue of King Jose I is the centre point of Praça do Comércio, it depicts king José I (Joseph I) riding his horse trampling snakes and ready for battle. The enormous 18 metre statue is set on a pedestal decorated with large sculptures including an elephant.
Triumphal Arch
The Triumphal arch leading to Rua Augusta was also built after the great earth quake however it took 84 years to build. The arch was completed in 1873 and it depicts the figure of Glory crowning Genius and Bravery. Below them are important historical figures and coat of arms of Portugal. The arch stands an impressive 30 metres high and it is possible to take an elevator to the top where a terrace provides outstanding 360 degree views of Lisbon
Praça do Comércio is lined with AL fresco restaurants perfect for a relaxing and stress free meal after a long day sight seeing. Restaurants include Can the Can, Nosolo Itália and Populi.
