Miradouro das Fontaínhas is a popular viewpoint with captivating views of the Douro River and Gaia. Located on the western side of Porto, this viewpoint is famous for its authentic Porto atmosphere.
Its a popular spot with locals who hold outdoor dance classes, BBQs and have family events during spring and summer months.
There are local cafes where you can grab a coffee or a fino.
The area has not been gentrified so do not expect to grab a latte with oat milk, the viewpoint is for those that want to experience real Porto. Some could consider the area as a little shady, so we dont advise going late at night but during the day its perfectly OK.

Absolutely! It’s just a short disance from the Porto Cathedral (Sé)? You’ll need to cut through a car park to find it, dont worry you are not in the wrong place
Atmosphere
A popular local hangout during the summer months. It can feel a little sketchy after dark, though, so we’d recommend visiting during the day.
Local tip
Visit during São João season in June! Fontainhas is one of the places where locals gather to celebrate, with music, food, drinks and a fantastic atmosphere. It’s a brilliant way to experience Porto beyond the usual tourist spots.
Miradouro da Rua das Aldas
Miradouro da Rua das Aldas is located just in front of the Sé do Porto.
What makes Miradouro da Rua das Aldas special is its setting right in front of Porto Cathedral. From this little terrace, you can look across the rooftops towards the Douro, with the striking Igreja de São Lourenço (Igreja dos Grilos) adding to the view.
It’s also a great starting point for heading down towards Ribeira, with the tradional neighbourhood and narrow streets leading you deeper into Porto’s historic centre. Stop for a few minutes, take in the views, then follow the route downhill and see where it takes you.

Jardim do Morro, is a remarkable and iconic viewpoint located in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the Douro River from Porto. This viewpoint offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Porto’s historic cityscape, the Douro River, and its various bridges.
Jardim do Morro, also known as the Garden of the Hill. It’s easily one of the most popular Porto sunset spots, particularly during the summer months. This garden offers a green escape from the urban bustle and provides stunning views of Porto’s historic Ribeira district, the Douro River, and the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge.
Jardim do Morro is especially enchanting during summer sunset when the sky is painted with warm hues and the city’s lights begin to twinkle. This is a popular time for both locals and tourists to visit the garden, as it offers a magical atmosphere that’s perfect for capturing photographs and enjoying romantic moments.

Buzzing! Particularly in the summer, when locals and visitors gather on the grass with drinks, music and friends to watch the sun go down. Expect a lively crowd.
Local tip
Get there early if you want a good spot on the grass for sunset. Pick up a drink or some snacks beforehand, but during summer people are around selling drinks. It’s one of those places where you won’t be in a hurry to leave!
Miradouro da Serra do Pilar
What sets Miradouro da Serra do Pilar apart is not only the stunning vistas it provides but also its historical significance and architecture. The viewpoint is situated on a hill that’s crowned by the Serra do Pilar Monastery, a 16th-century building with a circular layout and a dome reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome. The monastery itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture in Portugal.
From Miradouro da Serra do Pilar, you can enjoy an exceptional view of Porto’s Ribeira district. The most prominent feature of the view is the majestic Dom Luís I Bridge, which connects Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
This is another popular and iconic photo opportunity spot, its always busy but not too busy that you will not find a spot to take amazing pictures.

A little quieter and more relaxed than neighbouring Jardim do Morro. It’s a popular spot for sightseeing and sunset, but generally feels less lively and party-like.
Local tip
Don’t just admire the view from outside! The Serra do Pilar Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you have time, explore the impressive circular church and cloister – they’re well worth a look.

Dom Luís I Bridge Viewpoint
Finally we have Activities in Portugal favourite viewpoint on our list of the best viewpoints in Porto.
The view from the Dom Luís I Bridge upper deck is a stunning experience that offers a unique perspective of both Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. The upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge is a pedestrian walkway, with a tram route, providing a wonderful opportunity for visitors to walk across the bridge on foot while enjoying breathtaking views and watching the boat pass below.
From the upper deck, you’ll have a clear and unobstructed view of the Douro River below. On either side of the river, you’ll be able to appreciate the charming architecture of both Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
The bridge’s upper deck is particularly enchanting during sunset and evening hours. The warm, golden light of the setting sun casts a magical glow over the river and the city, creating a romantic scene.
The vantage point from the upper deck is perfect for getting stunning photographs of the river, the bridges and the cityscapes.

Busy, lively and full of people enjoying the views. There’s a real buzz up here, especially around sunset, but watch out for the metro sharing the bridge!
Local tip
Walk across from Porto to Gaia and back if you have time. The views are different in each direction, and you can stop at Jardim do Morro or Serra do Pilar along the way. Just keep an eye out for the metro and stick to the pedestrian walkway!
Viewpoint da Vitória
Miradouro da Vitória was one of my favourite viewpoints in Porto, with fantastic views across the Douro, Gaia and some of Porto’s most famous landmarks.
Unfortunately, the viewpoint has now been blocked off due to construction work, so you can no longer access the main viewing area. Hopefully it will reopen once the work is finished, as it is definitely worth visiting when access is restored.
Gardens, Parks and Green Spaces
Parque das Virtudes
Jardim das Virtudes is one of Porto’s best kept secrets, a multi level garden offering stunning panoramic views over the Douro River.
On a sunny day, it becomes a lively area where locals gather to wind the day away.
Behind the viewpoint you have multiple cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy the view whilst sipping a red or eating a Bifana.

Best For:
Relaxing in the sunshine, enjoying lovely views over Porto and the Douro Picnics and watching the sunset away from the busiest tourist spots.
Easy To Reach?
Its located in the centre of Porto and very easy to reach.
Atmosphere
Laid-back and a little bohemian. A favourite with local students, friends and couples who come to sit on the grassy terraces, chat and enjoy the views. It has a much more chilled-out feel than Jardim do Morro.
Local tip
Don’t just stick to the top! Take a walk around the corner. The garden is spread over several terraces, so wander down through the different levels to discover other lovely viewpoints.
Jardins do Palácio de Cristal
Tucked away in the Palácio de Cristal Gardens, there’s a little stone tower that feels like something straight out of a fairytale, or maybe a pirate hideout. It’s not the biggest or grandest tower in Porto, but that’s exactly what makes it so fun. Climb the winding steps, and suddenly, you’re king (or queen) of the gardens, with sweeping views over the Douro River.
The tower itself has a slightly weathered, mystical charm, like it’s been standing there forever, just waiting for curious explorers to stumble upon it. It’s the perfect spot to snap an Instagram worthy photo, soak in the scenery, or just take a breather from all the walking. On a misty or rainy day, the whole place feels even more enchanted, with raindrops glistening on the stone and the gardens looking extra lush.
Whether you’re here to chase storybook vibes or just want a cool hidden gem to add to your Porto adventure, this little tower is a must-climb. Plus, who doesn’t love feeling like they’ve discovered a secret? The park opens at 08:00 and closes at 21:00 in summer.

Yes! It’s around a 15–20 minute uphill walk from Porto’s historic centre. It’s a bit of a climb, but the gardens are well worth the effort!

Peaceful, leafy and a little magical. With winding paths, fountains, colourful flowers and roaming peacocks, it’s a lovely escape from the busy city streets.
Local tip
Take your time exploring because there are plenty of beautiful corners to discover.
Hidden Viewpoints and Local Favs
Pedra dos Gatinhos (Cats’ Rock)
Pedra dos Gatinhos is one of Porto’s more quirky hidden gems in Porto, tucked along the banks of the Douro River. This unassuming rocky outcrop, hidden behind the Serra do Pilar, has a name that translates to “Rock of the Kittens”, sparking curiosity.
Maybe it has its name from the stray cats in the area, who knows, it’s a peaceful spot where you can take photos of the Bridge from an angle others will not have.
It is not an easy spot to reach and we only recommend to those who are fit and strong but the climb is worth for one of the best hidden gems in Porto.
Best For:
Something a little different! Coastal scenery, unusual rock formations and escaping the usual tourist trail. For the adventurous.
Easy To Reach?
No not at all! Pedra dos Gatinhos is only for those who are able to climb!
Atmosphere
Quiet, rugged and a world away from central Porto.
Local tip
Dont go when it rains!
Mirodouro Do Infante
Tucked away on the Gaia side of the Douro, Miradouro do Infante is a little off the beaten track but well worth the detour. From this hillside viewpoint, you get a fantastic view back across Porto, with the Douro winding between the two cities and the Ponte do Infante and Ponte de D. Luís I taking centre stage.
It’s a much quieter spot than some of Gaia’s better known viewpoints, making it a great place to escape the crowds, take a few photos.

If you fancy escaping the city streets for a bit of greenery, Miradouro da Ponte da Arrábida in the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal is well worth a visit.
Tucked among the gardens, this viewpoint offers lovely views along the Douro, with the impressive Ponte da Arrábida stretching across the river towards the Atlantic.

Parque das Águas / Parque de Nova Sintra
Parque das Águas is one of Porto’s hidden gardens and a great place to escape the crowds. If you are looking for somewhere peaceful where you can wander through a beautiful old garden, sit under the trees and discover a little bit of Porto’s history, this is a lovely place to visit.
The park is actually an open air museum dedicated to Porto’s relationship with water. Hidden amongst the trees you will find old fountains, chafarizes and water structures, some dating back to the 16th century. It is much quieter than many of Porto’s other parks, making it a great place to slow down.
The park is in Bonfim, close to Campanhã and Heroísmo, and entrance is free during opening hours.

It’s a little off the main tourist trail. You can walk from the city centre, but it’s quite a trek, so a bus or taxi might be a better option.
Atmosphere
Quiet, green and wonderfully local. It’s a lovely place to escape the crowds, with mature trees, old fountains and plenty of space to wander.
Local tip
Keep an eye out for the collection of historic fountains and water structures dotted around the park. It’s not your typical tourist attraction, but that’s part of its charm. Take your camera and enjoy exploring!
Escadas dos Guindais
Escadas dos Guindais is one of those places in Porto where you can really feel the old city. These steep stone steps run down from the Sé and Batalha area towards the Douro, passing alongside sections of Porto’s old Fernandine walls.
It is a masssive exausting climb up, but a good way to go down. As you make your way down, you get great views over the old rooftops, the Douro River and the famous Dom Luís I Bridge. There are also some great little spots to stop for a photo along the way. Its an instagramers favourite location.

Exploring Porto’s old streets, Enjoy lovely views as you make your way down towards the river.

Very! You’ll find the steps just below Porto Cathedral and the Batalha area. They’re an easy walk from the historic centre, although be prepared for quite a few steps!
Atmosphere
Old-school Porto! Expect narrow lanes, historic buildings, locals going about their day and plenty of character. It’s a little rough around the edges, but that’s part of its charm.
Local tip
Take your time on the way down and stop for photos of the Dom Luís I Bridge and the colourful houses along the way. You can finish your walk in Ribeira, where you’ll find plenty of places to grab a drink or something to eat.
Where to See Porto from Above
Clérigos Tower
Clérigos Tower is one of Porto’s most iconic landmarks. Standing 76 meters tall, it’s a Baroque tower with 240 steps leading to panoramic views over the city. From the top, you can see Porto’s terracotta rooftops, the Douro River, and its famous bridges, perfect for photos or just taking in the scale of the city. But be aware the space at the top is tight squeeze.
The tower is attached to Clérigos Church, which is worth a look for its calm interiors and detailed architecture. Designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni.
Built between 1735 and 1748 in, yes you guessed it, a baroque style it is one of the most beautiful churches in Porto.
Whether you’re into history, design or just want a great vantage point, you have to visit here on your one day itinerary in Porto.

Absolutely! It’s right in the heart of Porto’s historic centre, just a short walk from São Bento Station, Livraria Lello and Avenida dos Aliados.
Atmosphere
Busy, buzzing and full of visitors. The tower is one of Porto’s most popular attractions, and there’s a real sense of achievement when you finally reach the top!
Local tip
There are around 240 steps to climb, and the staircase gets pretty narrow towards the top. Take your time, especially if you’re not a fan of tight spaces. The views are worth the puff and pant!
Teleférico de Gaia
Fancy seeing Porto from a different angle? Hop aboard the Teleférico de Gaia and enjoy a bird’s eye view as you glide above the rooftops of Gaia’s famous Port wine cellars. Connecting Cais de Gaia with Jardim do Morro, the ride takes around five minutes, but there’s plenty to see along the way. The journey takes approximately 5–6 minutes each way.
Look out across the Douro towards Porto’s colourful Ribeira, spot the iconic Ponte D. Luís I and take in the sweeping river views. At the top, you’re just steps away from Jardim do Morro, one of the best spots in Gaia to watch the sunset.
It’s a fun little ride, a great way to avoid the steep uphill walk and an easy addition to any Porto sightseeing itinerary. Just remember to have your camera ready!
