10 Amazing Beaches in Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia
Porto might be famous for port wine and beautiful riverside, but there’s another side to the city that’s well worth exploring, the coastline!
I’ve lived in the Porto area since 2022, so I’ve had plenty of time to explore the beaches, coastal walks and seaside spots around Porto, Matosinhos and Vila Nova de Gaia.
Head west towards Foz do Douro and Matosinhos or cross the Douro and explore the coastline of Vila Nova de Gaia, where there are spectacular beaches and the iconic seaside chapel of Senhor da Pedra.
Whether you’re looking for somewhere to catch the sunset, try your hand at surfing, enjoy a long walk by the Atlantic or simply escape the city for a few hours, there’s a beach to suit you.
We’ve picked 10 of our favourite beaches in and around Porto, including a few hidden secret spots on the Gaia coastline. So grab your sunglasses and let’s head to the beach!

Praia das Pastoras
Tucked away in Foz do Douro and the first “real” beach you reach from Porto, Praia das Pastoras is a small beach right where the Douro River meets the Atlantic. It’s surrounded by the Foz piers, which make the water here feel more like a natural swimming pool than an open Atlantic beach and importantly that makes the water is warm compared to the Atlantic Ocean and another plus the piers offer some protection from the wind, making this beach less exposed from the other beaches.
It’s a lovely spot for a walk, especially if you continue along the coast towards the famous Felgueiras Lighthouse. The views across the river are beautiful, and you can see the beaches on the other side of the Douro.
The beach itself can get busy, its popular with families thanks to the warm calm waters so get there early. If you dont want to sunbath you can enjoy the views and watch the waves rolling into the mouth of the river. If you’re already exploring Foz, it’s definitely worth adding to your walk.
The Felgueiras Lighthouse was built in 1886 and this iconic lighthouse sits at the end of the breakwater where the Douro meets the Atlantic. It’s a popular spot for photographs, especially at sunset or when the waves come crashing over the rocks. It will be watching over as you enjoy your beach time.
Best For
Families visit the Clube Minigolfe do Porto if the kids get bored, river views and photography.

Take the historic tram (Line 1) from Ribeira or Bus 500 from Porto city centre.

Praia do Carneiro
Praia do Carneiro is located in Foz do Douro, just beside the historic Forte de São João Baptista. It’s a lovely little Porto beach with a mix of sand and pebbles, offering beautiful views out towards the Atlantic.
It’s a great spot to enjoy the seaside atmosphere, take a walk along the promenade or stop for a drink at one of the nearby cafés. The beach has basic facilities, including toilets, and is easily accessible from Porto city centre.
Best For
Large groups that want to play beach sports, seaside views and relaxing by the ocean.
Getting There

Praia dos Ingleses
Praia dos Ingleses is one of the larger beaches in Foz, with a friendly atmosphere and plenty of space to relax, even when it gets busy. It’s surrounded by rocky formations, so you can find a private spot if you need to escape the crowd.
The Atlantic can be quite rough here, with strong waves and currents, so it’s not always the best choice for swimming. It is good for large groups of friends.
There isn’t a huge choice of facilities directly on the beach, so bring what you need if you’re planning to spend the day here. There are also cafés and restaurants nearby if you fancy a break.

Large groups that want to play beach sports, seaside views and relaxing by the ocean.

Praia de Gondarém
Praia de Gondarém is a mix of rocky and sandy beach in Foz do Douro. It’s a great spot for sunbathing, exploring the rocks or simply enjoying a drink at one of the nearby beach bars. The ocean’s shallow waters make it perfect for paddling.
The beach has a lovely stretch of sand, with a accessible promenade running alongside it that’s perfect for a long coastal walk. You’ll also find showers, public toilets and drinking water facilities, making it a convenient choice if you’re planning to spend a few hours by the sea.
It’s particularly pretty on a sunny day, so don’t forget your camera!
Local tip, it can get windy so buy a wind breaker to feel more comfortable on the sand.

Praia do Molhe
Praia do Molhe is one of the most recognisable beaches in Foz do Douro, thanks to its famous Pérgola da Foz, the lifeguard statue and the beautiful stone jetty. It’s has a raw, wild beauty thats unique in the area but it can get crowded in the summer. It’s a lovely spot for sunbathing or watching the sunset over the Atlantic.
The beach has golden sand and rock formations that create natural pools. Swimming in the open sea can be challenging when the waves and currents are strong, so always take care.
There are cafés, bars and restaurants nearby, making it a great choice for couples, families or groups of friends looking to spend an afternoon by the sea. Personally, I think it’s one of the nicest spots in Porto to watch the sunset!
Local tip, My Auchan is close by so you can grab the food and drinks you need to take them for a cheap day on the beach.

Praia do Homem do Leme
Praia do Homem do Leme is a popular family beach in Foz do Douro, and it’s easy to see why! It has two children’s playgrounds, a lovely promenade and plenty of space to enjoy a day by the sea.
The beach has a mix of sand and rock formations, making it a nice spot for sunbathing and exploring. There’s also a lovely beachfront restaurant, Restaurante Homem do Leme, where you can enjoy a meal or cocktail with your feet practically in the sand or head to iBar Praia do Aquário for a seaside lounge with comfy seating, bean bags right on the sand and you can bring doggies 🙂
It’s a great choice for families, couples and groups of friends, with beautiful ocean views and plenty going on nearby.
It’s also one of Porto’s accessible beaches, with adapted facilities and amphibious wheelchair access during the bathing season. It has Blue Flag status and is particularly popular with families.

It’s easily accessible by public transportation, including buses and the Porto Metro system.
