Lisbon has a remarkable connection with James Bond and Spies, as the idea for the character was actually “conceived” in the Region. During World War II Portugal was a neutral country however it still played a pivotal role in the war.  Diplomats, spies and refugees from all over Europe converged on peaceful Lisbon for intrigue, glamour and betrayal.

Lisbon was awash with spies and glamour throughout the war and was considered to be the only place where both sides could meet on equal ground.

Prior to the US joining the war the Americans sent a steady stream of personnel to work in Lisbon embassies but all was not as it seemed, many had false identities and were tasked with gathering as much intel as possible. The allies and the Nazis mixed at grand dinners, the casino, fado shows, sunbathing and coffee shops, they were always within earshot of each other and when they were not listening devices were used. On its demolition the Atlántico hotel, famous being the Nazi Spies headquarter in Lisbon, was found to have an assortment of bugs in every room. Lisbon became a city of dangerous games.
