Lisbon At Christmas

Christmas in Lisbon doesn’t try too hard. The city simply switches on its lights, opens a few well-placed markets and lets the atmosphere do the work.
Lisbon at Christmas is relaxed rather than theatrical. The markets are easy to navigate, the lights are generous without being over the top and the events range from low-key to full-on festive. Whether you’re drifting through Rossio or taking in the giant tree at Praça do Comércio, the city delivers a simple, enjoyable December break.

Lisbon is much busier at Christmas than it used to be, but it still has a lovely atmosphere. The weather is mild for the season, there may be a bit of rain, but daytime temperatures rarely fall below 15°C and nights usually stay above 10°C. Making Christmas shopping after dark a real pleasure.

Lisbon Christmas Lights & the Big Tree 🎄

Lisbon officially kicks off the season with the Christmas Lights and Tree Lighting on 23 November 2025, held in Praça do Comércio. The square gets crowded but in a friendly, local way. Everyone enjoys the countdown to the
lights turning on and then the wonderful fireworks.

The highlight is the 76-metre Christmas tree, billed as the tallest in Europe. Whether or not you’re impressed by heights, it’s a good starting point for a wander through Baixa’s beautiful lit-up streets.

Wonderland Lisboa – Parque Eduardo VII

Wonderland Lisboa – Parque Eduardo VII, 1070-051 Lisbon | Find on Map

This is Lisbon’s biggest Christmas attraction, and honestly, it’s hard not to get swept up in it.

Wonderland Lisboa takes over Parque Eduardo VII with a proper winter-fair setup: a full-size ice rink, a Ferris wheel with city views, photo spots, festive stalls, and enough food stands to keep you looping between churros and hot chocolate all evening.

It is loud and busy at peak times, expect families, excitable kids and couples taking the Ferris wheel far too seriously, but that’s half the fun.

It’s cheerful, slightly chaotic, and absolutely worth visiting if you’re in Lisbon in December.

Runs from 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026.

22-24 November, so blink and you might miss this event.

🍴 Food & Drinks to Taste During Christmas in Portugal

Savoury Snacks & Street Food
Here are some savoury snacks and street-food you’ll commonly find at Christmas markets in Portugal, perfect for wandering a festive market and fixing those hunger pangs.
Pão com Chouriço – A warm, freshly baked bread roll filled with spicy Portuguese sausage. Perfect on the go while exploring xmas markets.
Roasted Chestnuts – A classic winter street snack. Grab a cone from a street vendor and enjoy the nutty warmth as you wander the festive streets.
Bifanas & Pregos – Traditional Portuguese sandwiches: bifanas are marinated pork, pregos are steak, both served in crusty bread. Filling, hearty, and very local.
Crepes & Waffles – Sweet, soft, and often topped with chocolate, caramel, or fruit, these are a quick festive treat.
Bombons de Marshmallow – Soft marshmallow treats coated in chocolate, loved by kids and adults alike.

Festive Drinks
Vinho Quente – Portuguese-style mulled wine, spiced and warm, perfect for cold winter nights.

Shot of Ginja – The famous sour cherry liqueur, sometimes served in an edible chocolate cup for a festive twist.

Christmas Sweets & Convent Traditions
Portugal has a long history of seasonal desserts, many rooted in convent recipes. At Christmas, expect rich, sweet treats like:
Bolo Rei (King Cake) – A ring-shaped cake studded with dried fruits and nuts. A must-try festive classic.
Bolo Rainha – Similar to Bolo Rei but without the candied fruit, perfect if you prefer a milder version.
Rabanadas – Portugal’s take on French toast, soaked in sugar syrup and cinnamon.
Sonhos – Literally “dreams”: deep-fried dough balls dusted with sugar and cinnamon.
Filhós / Filhoses – Sweet fritters, sometimes made with pumpkin or dough, fried and sprinkled with sugar.
Aletria – Sweet vermicelli pudding, delicate and lightly spiced.
Arroz Doce – Creamy, comforting rice pudding, often finished with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

🎁 Portuguese Christmas Traditions

Christmas in Portugal is a mix of family, faith, and festive flair, with traditions that vary by region but all share a strong sense of community.

Janeiras — Singing in the New Year
In early January, it’s common to hear groups of locals singing Janeiras, traditional carols to welcome the new year. The songs are cheerful, sometimes humorous, and a fun way to experience Portuguese folk culture.

Christmas Eve & Missa do Galo
In Lisbon and many other towns, December 24th is the main celebration, not the 25th. Families gather for a long dinner called Consoada, featuring traditional dishes that vary by region:
Bacalhau com todos – Codfish with potatoes, cabbage, eggs, and chickpeas.
Polvo à lagareiro – Roast octopus in olive oil, popular in the Minho and Douro regions.
Roupa velha – A dish made from bacalhau leftovers, served in northern areas on the 25th.
After dinner, many locals walk through quiet streets to attend Missa do Galo (Midnight Mass). Churches like Lisbon Cathedral or São Roque fill with candlelight and choirs, creating an intimate, meaningful atmosphere — whether you’re religious or just curious, it’s a truly local experience.

Presépio — Nativity Scenes
Nativity displays are extremely popular in Portugal, often larger and more detailed than Christmas trees. Many towns create elaborate public nativity villages, giving the festive season a distinctive Portuguese touch.

Madeiros & Christmas Fires
In rural areas, especially Trás-os-Montes and Beira Alta, large communal bonfires called madeiros de Natal are lit on Christmas Eve. These fires are more than decoration — they’re social gatherings that symbolise warmth, community, and the light of Christ.

These traditions combine food, music, faith, and community, giving Portuguese Christmas a character that’s both festive and deeply cultural. Walking the streets during the holidays, hearing choirs, seeing bonfires, or admiring nativity scenes offers a glimpse into how locals truly celebrate the season.
