Constructed in 1533, this 5 Star HOtel later became a part of the estate belonging to the Counts of Ericeira—an influential and noble family that rose to occupy significant positions of power in Portugal. During their ownership, the palace experienced its peak of grandeur. However, in 1755, the structure succumbed to the devastating earthquake that struck Lisbon. Following its reconstruction in the late 18th century, the palace served as the residence of the Marquises de Rio Maior. Notably, it became the birthplace of illustrious figures in Portuguese politics and society, including João Oliveira e Daun, the Duke of Saldanha, who held the position of Prime Minister of Portugal on multiple occasions between 1835 and 1870.
